Meet Bernardo

Bernardo Perez has extensive community- and elected office-based leadership experience that spans over four decades, including twelve years on the Moorpark City Council including a term as Mayor. Since 2010, he has represented District 4 (Simi Valley/Moorpark) as a Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) Trustee. During this time and working with other dedicated individuals and community groups, Bernardo has:

  • Advocated for and produced affordable housing choices for working families, farmworkers, Seniors  and Special Needs populations,

  • Increased the availability and access to healthcare,

  • Saved taxpayers over $12 Million Dollars and reduced long term obligations by $53 Million Dollars,

  • Increased future federal funding to the city of Moorpark by approximately $26 Million Dollars,

  • Helped prevent the closure of our local Navy Base while saving related civilian jobs,

  • Helped implement Living Wage Ordinances in the cities of Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Ventura and the County of Ventura

  • Cut utility costs with the installation of solar panels at our three community colleges and added over 250 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at our community colleges

Bernardo and his wife of 53 years, Vicky, have lived in Moorpark for the past 52 years while raising their three children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren! With a lifetime spent in our backyard, Bernardo has gotten to know the community inside and out and has been active in the region's development as an appointed and elected official and community volunteer.

Bernardo started his public service career by serving on the Moorpark Downtown Neighborhood Council, the Peach Hill Neighborhood Council prior to cityhood, and then on the city's Planning Commission. He has since served on many local and regional planning agencies and community-based organizations that focus on the needs of District 4 citizens.

 

Some examples of the groups Bernardo has worked with are the Adventist Health Simi Valley Hospital Foundation, the High Street Arts Center in historic downtown Moorpark, Knights of Columbus Council 9969, Museum of Ventura County, House Farmworkers!, Moorpark Complete Count Committee, Census 2020, Workforce Education Coalition, Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance, Moorpark Chamber of Commerce, Ventura County Workforce Development Board, United Way of Ventura County, HOME Housing Task Force, Ventura County Living Wage Coalition, Ventura Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO), Archdiocese of Los Angeles Justice and Peace Commission, BRAC-95 Task Force and as a classroom volunteer for his children and grandchildren.
